  • Existing Rent Control Legislation
    The East Punjab Urban Rent Restriction Act, 1949 (and Haryana Act of 1973) continue governing many tenancy issues in Chandigarh, Mohali, and adjoining areas. These laws determine fair rent and establish safeguards against arbitrary eviction.     In a landmark decision (July 2025), the Punjab & Haryana High Court ruled that a landlord can seek eviction if a property is needed for use by a private limited company fully controlled by the landlord or family, treating it as a legitimate personal necessity—even though the company is legally separate.
